Quantity Takeoff Principles — Order, Units, and Cross-Checks
Takeoff accuracy comes from method, not speed. A disciplined sequence and a habit of cross-checking catch most errors before they reach the bid.
Work in a fixed order
Follow construction sequence — substructure, superstructure, envelope, services, finishes, external works. Within each, follow trades. A consistent order means you notice what is missing.
Measure net, in standard units

Measure the net quantity of work; keep wastage as a separate, visible allowance so it can be reviewed.
Dimension discipline
- Write dimensions in a consistent order (length × width × height).
- Reference every measurement to a drawing number and grid.
- Use “dotting on” and “timesing” so counts are auditable.
- Deduct openings and voids explicitly — never eyeball.
Cross-check everything

Standard methods of measurement
Adopt a recognised method (POMI, SMM7/NRM2, or a local standard) so bidders measure the same way and comparisons are valid. State which one governs in the preliminaries.
