Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culvert and Headwall Takeoff
A culvert is a small structure with a lot of line items. Break it into the pipe, the ends, and the earthworks around it.
The pipe
- Length along the culvert centreline, including the barrel under the road and any extension for widening.
- Diameter and class (D-load) from the hydraulic and structural design.
- Jointing โ rubber-ring or mortar; count joints for the sealing material.
Bedding and haunch
Haunch/surround = to the specified bedding class (Class B, granular to springline; Class A, concrete cradle)
Headwalls, wingwalls, aprons
Take off each as a small concrete structure: volume by dimensions, formwork by contact area, reinforcement by bar schedule. Add the cut-off wall / toe below the apron for scour, and any weep holes and filter material behind the walls.
Earthworks

Protection and finishing
Riprap or grouted stone at inlet and outlet, gabion aprons where scour is severe, channel regrading upstream and downstream, guard rail or parapet over the culvert, and topsoil/turf on the disturbed slopes.
