The Average End Area Method for Cut and Fill Volumes

The average end area method is the workhorse of linear earthworks โ€” roads, channels, pipelines. It trades a little accuracy for a calculation you can do on a spreadsheet.

The formula

V = L × (A₁ + A₂) / 2

A₁ and A₂ are the cut (or fill) cross-sectional areas at two adjacent stations; L is the distance between them. Sum station-to-station along the alignment.

Getting the areas

At each station, plot existing ground against the design template (formation width, side slopes, ditch). The area between them is cut where design is below ground, fill where design is above. Compute by coordinates, by the trapezoidal rule across offsets, or by planimeter on a drawn section.

Prismoidal correction

Average end area slightly over-estimates when the section is changing shape. For higher accuracy:

V = L/6 × (A₁ + 4Am + A₂)

where Am is the area of the section midway between the two stations (measured, not averaged).

Mixed sections

Where a section has both cut and fill (side-hill ground), compute the cut area and fill area separately and carry two running totals. Never net them at the section โ€” cut and fill have different haul, compaction, and disposal costs.
