Conventional vs Addressable FDAS โ Cost and Design Impact
The conventional-versus-addressable choice sets the panel, the devices, the wiring quantity, and the future flexibility of the whole system.
How each locates an alarm
- Conventional: devices are wired into zones. The panel shows which zone is in alarm โ a floor, a wing, an area. You then search the zone.
- Addressable: each device has a unique address on a loop. The panel shows the exact device and its location text.

Cost
- Conventional โ cheaper panel and devices; more cable and conduit; more labour terminating home runs. Economical below ~15โ20 zones.
- Addressable โ higher panel and per-device cost; far less cable; faster to commission and modify. Cost-effective and often mandated for larger or multi-storey buildings.
When the code decides for you
RA 9514 and NFPA 72 effectively require addressable systems for high-rise buildings, large occupancies, and where per-device annunciation is needed for the fire response plan. Where it is optional, base it on zone count, expected changes, and the value of precise location to the building’s fire brigade.
Hybrid
Addressable panel with conventional zone modules for a small legacy wing is common and can be the least-cost compliant path on a renovation.
