Grid-Tied vs Hybrid vs Off-Grid — Choosing the System Type
The single biggest design decision in a solar project is the system type. It sets whether you buy batteries, whether the system works in a blackout, and how the numbers pencil out.
Grid-tied (no battery)
- Solar offsets daytime load; excess exports to the grid (credited under net metering where available).
- At night, the home runs on grid power.
- Shuts down during a grid outage (anti-islanding).
- Lowest cost per kWp; best simple payback.

Hybrid (solar + battery + grid)
- Solar serves load, charges the battery, then exports.
- Battery covers evening load and rides through outages (backup loads sub-panel).
- Can shift energy from cheap or solar hours to peak-rate hours (time-of-use arbitrage).
- Higher cost; payback depends heavily on outage frequency and tariff structure.
Off-grid (no utility connection)
- The system must meet 100% of load in the worst month, with days of autonomy for bad weather.
- Large battery bank and often a backup generator.
- Array and battery are oversized versus a grid-tied system of the same “usable” output — cost per kWh delivered is the highest.
- Justified by distance from the grid or connection cost, not by payback against a bill.
